Second Biomass Retrieval Inter-comparison eXercise

The event is organised by ESA together with NASA and it is taking place from 29 to 30 April 2021, 16:00-18:00 [CEST] |
10:00-12:00 [Washington] | 07:00-09:00 [Los Angeles].

BRIX-2 Objectives:

  • Provide an objective, standardized comparison and assessment of biomass retrieval algorithms developed for the BIOMASS, NISAR and GEDI missions, and fusion of these mission datasets;
  • Establish a forum to involve scientists in the development of retrievals that have so far not been part of the Biomass community;
  • The adoption of vetted validation standards and methods to compare biomass estimates to reference datasets (e.g. field plots or airborne lidar biomass maps);
  • Collect inputs from the biomass user and scientific community on data formats and characteristics towards the generation of Analysis Ready Data.

These objectives will be achieved by making available standardised test cases (based on airborne campaign and spaceborne data) on the ESA-NASA Mission Analysis and Algorithm Platform, allowing the scientific community to develop and apply retrieval algorithms based on this test case, and finally compare and evaluate the performance of submitted results.

Registration

You can register to the BRIX-2 until Monday 26th April by sending an email to brix@esa.int indicating you name, surname, affiliation, and describing in a few sentences your motivation to participate to this exercise and a short description of your biomass model (if any, references are welcome).

Guidelines for authors

A dedicated ppt conference template (in 16:9) is available for the download in support to the presenters:

PPT TEMPLATE

ORAL PRESENTERS

The presenters are kindly requested to upload their presentations on the dedicated laptop of the speaker ready corner located in the conference room(s) Plenary and Grand Toulouse. A technician will be present to assist during the process.

Presentations will have to be uploaded via USB stick up to 30 minutes before the start of the session.

Before doing so, please check the online programme at Agenda | ESA Polinsar Biomass 2023 for the following information:

  • Date of the presentation
  • Title of the session
  • Order of the presentation (e.g., 1st, 2nd, 3rd….)

File name convention and format

Please name your presentation according to the following:

  • Presentation Order in the session
  • Presenter Last name

E.g., 01_Brown.pptx/pdf

For each accepted contribution you can upload one file (max 230MB) as ppt, pptx or pdf.

The suggested format for presentation is 16:9.

Presenters are advised to check prior to their session start if formulas/animations/videos are shown correctly. Please ensure you are in the session room at least 30 minutes before the session begins to meet with the session chairs, who will be near the stage. During the session, a member of the technical team will launch the presentation for you. The presenters must change the slides with the “slide advance device” placed on the podium.

Any presentation from personal laptops is not allowed to ensure a smooth programme running and minimise the transition time between presentations.
Following the event, the presentations will be published online and prior authors’ consent.

POSTER PRESENTERS

The required poster size is A0, portrait orientation. Poster width should not exceed 90 cm (36″) height should not exceed 122 cm (48″).
Poster authors are expected to present their posters to the scientific community at the dedicated poster session to be held on 21 June 2023 from 16:20pm to 18:00pm, in the Plenary room. Lunch and coffee breaks could also be opportunities to present the posters. Please take the opportunity to read other posters and exchange contact information. Poster presenters may want to have A4 copies of their posters and their business cards available for distribution.

Mounting
Presenters at the poster sessions shall bring their own printed posters. It will not be possible to print a poster onsite. All posters shall be mounted ahead of the poster session, i.e., starting 19 June PM coffee break through the lunch break. Materials for mounting posters will be provided at the poster session venue. Please check that your poster is located on the correct board. The list of posters will be available in the conference room. Posters shall be dismounted by the end of the event, those that have not been removed will be disposed-off.

Electronic format for inclusion in the online programme
Please also provide your poster in electronic format (.pdf version) at your earliest convenience and no later than 09/06/2023 by uploading the pdf to your user account in the ConfTool online application. Please note the upper file size limit is 20MB for upload.
